THE PRACTICE
Greenspace Architects
A dedicated architectural practice founded by Herman Fourie in 2010, working across Cape Town and the Garden Route.
Herman Fourie is the founder and Professional Architect at Greenspace Architects (SACAP Pr Arch 21066) and a Green Star SA Accredited Professional. His architectural experience spans South Africa and the United Kingdom, including homes, heritage, education, commercial work and large urban residential developments.
He qualified at the University of the Orange Free State, receiving a Bachelor of Architecture Studiorum in 1998 and a Bachelor of Architecture in 1999. In London, he led design teams and planning submissions for developments including 31–39 Millharbour and Bridges Wharf, and worked on residential projects with Grafik Architecture. He established himself in the Garden Route in 2006 and founded Greenspace Architects in 2010.
Today the practice connects Cape Town and George with associates from Plettenberg Bay to Langebaan. Herman remains personally involved from concept and municipal approvals through contract administration and completion. Environmental thinking includes passive design, energy efficiency, natural materials, water-conscious design and the relationship between building and landscape.
House du Toit near Gouritzmond was featured in SOUTH Magazine in December 2013 for its green design approach. The project uses a planted green roof and Scandinavian spruce structure; the magazine pages are available in the House du Toit case study.
